Operations Division
The Operations Division is comprised of Patrol, Dispatch, the K9 Unit, and School Resource Officers. The Division is led by Captain Todd Bergeson, the Operations Commander. The Shift Commander on each squad are responsible for all day to day operations on their shift. The shift commander is responsible for scheduling their assignments, hiring for overtime, reviewing arrest reports, reviewing arrest warrants, responding to serious incidents, and supervising the dispatch center.
During their 8-hour shift, the shift commander has additional administrative duties such as investigating civilian complaints, as well as use of force incidents, and officer involved vehicular accidents. The shift commanders are also responsible for notifying the on-call division commander of all serious incidents and coordinate with the detective division for additional assistance on serious crime scenes. In the absence of one of the Lieutenants, the Senior Sergeant acts as the shift commander. The Lieutenants answer directly to the division commander, and they work in conjunction to deal with divisional issues. This interaction allows for smooth and efficient operations in the Operations Division.
There are 3 Lieutenants and 9 Sergeants that lead the Operations Division. With 3 Sergeants assigned to each shift , their primary function is to supervise the officers that are patrolling the city. They are responsible for responding to crime scenes and coordinating support efforts. They review reports, and respond to serious incidents that require supervisor assistance. The Sergeants are also responsible for monitoring and inspecting officers work product and appearance. This is done by random inspections of motor vehicle stops, and responding to officers calls for service to ensure compliance with state law, and the departments policies and procedures.
In the absence of a Lieutenant, the Senior Sergeant on the shift will act as the Shift Commander will have the same tasks and responsibilities that the Lieutenants have. At all times both the Lieutenants and the Sergeants are available to address citizens that wish to file a civilian complaint.
