City of New London Seeks Valuable Input on How to Spend $26 Million

New London, Conn, July 30, 2021The City of New London is collecting electronic responses from residents and business owners to get ideas on how to use American Rescue Plan Act funds.

The deadline to complete the survey is Aug. 15.

New London received more than $26 million, which will arrive in 2021 and 2022. The money is intended to aid the city in a variety of ways, including assisting households, small businesses, and nonprofits as well as industry sectors, like tourism and retail.

Through the survey results, the city hopes to organize ideas and request more information from federal agencies when necessary.

We encourage residents and business owners to complete the survey so we know where their pain points are. Once we know this, we will be able to utilize the funds as effectively as possible,” said Mayor Michael Passero.

The questions in the approximately 10-minute survey include how COVID has affected residents the most and asks what needs are still unmet due to COVID. The survey also asks whether the city should create programs and initiatives that benefit residents in the long term or whether they should focus on the current needs of residents.

There are multiple-choice questions, and there is also a section that allows survey takers to describe in their own words their ideas for how to use the ARP funds.

On March 11, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (H.R. 1319). The $1.9 trillion package, based on President Biden's American Rescue Plan, is intended to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, including public health and economic impacts.

As part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, the $362 billion Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund provides fiscal aid to support urgent COVID-19 response efforts, cover increased expenditures, replenish lost revenue and mitigate economic harm from the COVID—19 pandemic.

"I urge our neighbors to fill out the survey," said Jeanne Milstein, the director of human services in New London. "The pandemic created significant hardships for so many in our community. Please let us know what you need to restore health, safety and well-being.”
