December 8, 2023

The City of New London Announces Snow Management Plan for the 2023-2024 Winter Season.

The city focuses on communication and cooperation to ensure City streets and sidewalks are passable during Storm Events.

The city has specific snow management plans for Downtown, Fort Trumbull, and residential neighborhoods.

In each case, parking restrictions and bans will be communicated on the City of New London’s website (www.newlondonct.org) and social media platforms (https://www.facebook.com/CityofNewLondonCT/ and https://www.facebook.com/NewLondonPolice/)

New London Public Works plows streets, city parking lots, Board of Education properties, and city-owned sidewalks.

Residential Neighborhoods

The timing of winter storm parking restrictions will be determined on a storm-by-storm basis. Once restrictions take effect, parking will be permitted only on the side of the street with buildings bearing ODD-numbered addresses. Snow will be plowed to create at least one travel lane on each street. The exception to this rule is on streets where parking is only permitted on one side. Cars parked in those situations can continue to park on the permitted side.

No Parking on NARROW STREETS.

Where parking is permitted ON ONLY ONE SIDE OF THE STREET, FOLLOW POSTED REGULATIONS.

Where parking is permitted ON BOTH SIDES OF THE STREET, PARK ON THE ODD SIDE OF THE STREET ONLY.

NO PARKING IN NEW LONDON PUBLIC SCHOOL PARKING LOTS.

The New London Police Department shall be ticketing and towing vehicles in violation of the Parking Ban.

New London Public Works, Police, and Fire experience great difficulties and challenges responding to requests for services, clearing the roadways, and responding to emergencies with vehicles improperly parking each year on the following streets:

Michael Rd.,

Anthony Rd.,

Boulder Dr.,

Buchanan Rd.,

Rogers St.,

Connecticut Ave.,

Belden St.,

Ledyard St.,

Mountain Ave.,

Cape Ann Court,

Eastern Ave. (at the top of the hill).

Downtown New London

As each storm approaches, the City’s Department of Public Works will monitor the weather and notify the City’s storm team 16 hours before the storm’s predicted arrival. Timing of parking bans downtown will be determined within 8 hours of the storm’s predicted arrival, with special consideration for business hours and scheduled events.

When downtown parking bans are announced No Parking on any streets in the Downtown Area

The Water Street Garage will be open for downtown residents and visitors at no charge, and snow removal will focus on State Street, Bank Street between State and Tilley, and upper Governor Winthrop Boulevard, behind the Garde Arts Center.

NO PARKING IN THE MUNICIPAL PARKING LOTS during Parking Bans. Parking Restrictions include the Municipal Parking Lots.

Fort Trumbull

Parking bans will be initiated only during off-business hours. Plowing of streets and sidewalks by the Department of Public Works will take place only between the hours of 5:00 pm and 7:00 am, with curb-to-curb plowing of all streets.

Cooperation is needed from all vehicle owners so the snow can be efficiently removed, and roadways can be opened for emergency vehicles to respond to all requests for assistance and public use. Residents and visitors should be patient while city public works employees work diligently to clear our streets.

City residents and businesses are also reminded that they are responsible for clearing sidewalks in front of their property and not depositing snow in city streets.

In an emergency, residents and business owners are encouraged to call 9-1-1.
